Review – Eternal Sleepwalker

The debut full-length from Heavydeath is something I’ve been listening to for a while now, but how to describe it has largely evaded me. The problem, I think, is that it’s so deceptively simple. In less capable hands the riffs would be shown for what they are: rudimentary, slumberous things with little change in pace or variation. In Heavydeath’s grip, however, they become hypnotic and ritualistic, capable of transfixing you while something truly awful occurs. Vocals are variously chanted or gurgled, but either way they add to the mesmeric murk and keep you locked into that rigid, entranced state that’s like a strange wakeful death. It’s a rare thing, and in this field one that relatively few acts (see: Bong, Om…) are really achieving at the moment. Colour me captured, and hungry for more of the eternal sleep they’re peddling, regardless of the consequences.

9/10

Chceme-li se bavit o kapele HEAVYDEATH, musíme zcela nutně začít někde jinde. Psát o HEAVYDEATH a nezmínit přitom jméno Runemagick totiž dle mého soudu dost dobře není možné. HEAVYDEATH je uskupením, které vzniklo teprve v roce 2013. První demonahrávku s názvem „Post Mortem In Aeternum Tenebrarum“ tito Švédi vydali o rok později, tedy v roce 2014. A kromě toho vydali v tomto roce šest dalších demonahrávek, jeden singl, jedno EP, a aby toho nebylo málo, tak i jednu kompilačku. Plodný loňský rok jako by byl jakousi předehrou a předstupněm pro velkolepé finále, kterou představuje letošní album „Eternal Sleepwalker“.

Doom death metal was born on the beginning of the 90s. Bands like PARADISE LOST, MY DYING BRIDE and ANATHEMA, due their mix of the heavy weight of slower pace tempos and depressive musical atmospheres of doom metal bands like CANDLEMASS, TROUBLE, SAINT VITUS, and WITCHFINDER GENERAL with the brutality of death metal, especially when we are dealing with extreme grunts on vocals. Albums like “Gothic”, “Serenades”, and “As The Flower Withers” and some others are sources of inspiration for many bands. And these bands are doing something more heavier and slower than before, what we are used to call funeral doom death metal. And on this style, are many good names, as the Brazilian HELLLIGHT and now, with Swedish trio HEAVYDEATH, coming with their first album, “Eternal Sleepwalker”, after many Demos and EPs.

Formed just two years ago in 2013, the Swedish trio consists of former members of death metal act Runemagick, namely Nicklas Rudolfsson (guitars and vocals), Daniel Moilanen (drums), and Johan Bäckman (bass). HeavyDeath came together with just one objective: to play “no frills,” “heavy death,” riff-laden doom metal. Pick the opening moments on any of these seven songs and you’ll see the band definitely lives up to its name. This band is heavy as death.

Having already teased us with 10 amazing demos, HeavyDeath has now emerged with their first full-length. Eternal Sleepwalker (2015) was recorded last summer, but just recently released through Svart Records in early March. I have been keeping up with these guys for quite some time now and it is exciting to finally take this record out for a spin. There is never enough death-doom in the world (at least in my world!)
